Singers and Tales in the 21st Century: The Legacies of Milman Parry and Albert Lord

On December 3-5, 2010, the Milman Parry Collection hosted a symposium to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Albert Lord's seminal Singer of Tales, and the 75th anniversary of the death of his mentor, Milman Parry. Twenty-nine speakers from around the world honored the legacies of these two pathfinding scholars by presenting original research, and live performances spotlighted the continuing vitality of oral traditions in the 21st century.

The symposium coincided with the opening of an exhibition in Houghton Library of materials from the Milman Parry Collection and the Harvard Library, curated by Amber Rose. The papers presented at the symposium are currently being prepared for publication by the event’s organizer, David Elmer.

Click on the links below to view complete video recordings of the presentations and performances. With the exception of the performances, the videos are listed in the order of the original conference program, which was organized according to eleven topical sessions devoted to crucial themes in the study of oral traditions.
